"From the Holy Land to the Heartland: History and Medicine”

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify how multiple medical systems in countries with political unrest impact patient care;
  2. Recognize how the socio-economic stability of a country can affect medical care;
  3. Discuss the impact of medical missions in those countries and how physicians can volunteer.

The program will include a history and a pictorial tour of the Holy Land and medical missions.

Nidal Harb, M.D., was born and raised in Jerusalem. He completed his undergraduate and medical degrees in Leningrad, a fellowship in cerebrovascular research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, a residency in internal medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiology at the University of Louisville.  He has held various administrative positions including Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Director of the Catheterization Laboratory. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association and on the Executive Council of the American College of Cardiology. In 1999 Dr. Harb went to Jerusalem and worked as a volunteer consultant to the Ministry of Health where he played a major role in modernizing cardiac care in the country. Dr. Harb joined Cardiovascular Medicine, P.C. in 2001. Dr. Harb is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is currently a clinical assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Iowa, and is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and nuclear cardiology.
There is no registration fee for members of the Scott County and Rock Island County Medical Societies.  Each member may bring his or her spouse or a special guest at no charge.  To register, please call the Quad City Medical Society office at (563) 328-3390 by May 2nd.  
 
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the Iowa Medical Society through the joint sponsorship of Scott County Medical Society and Genesis Medical Center. Genesis Medical Center is accredited by the Iowa Medical Society to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
